Social Sketching

BH_8548 (2)So, I went to a figure drawing class last week – my first in years.  I know what you’re thinking….classical music and passively competitive artists looking over your shoulder saying, ‘Hm…what an interesting perspective.’ when you know they mean something quite different.   No, no –  This wasn’t like that at all.

It was the best figure drawing experience I have ever had.  It was revolutionary, free-spirited, public art-making … with drinks.

Carbondale’s local arts council, CCAH, teamed up with Phat Thai (a fabulously delicious restaurant on Main Street) for an evening of  what they call “social sketching”.  Diners mingled with easel and crayon-toting artists as they positioned themselves for a good view of  the model of the evening, Ananda Banc.  Ananda also happens to be an amazing singer – think Amy Winehouse – and she sang throughout the night while holding her poses.  Incredible.  She was accompanied by her father Chris Bank on guitar, making for some really lovely music.  CCAH even provided drawing supplies for last minute sketchers. Come join the fun next month, Tuesday December 3rd.

In the meantime, check out a few snapshots below of the evening:  [nggallery id=92]

  1. These are great photos Bailey! Thanks for sharing… I’m looking forward to social sketching next month!

  2. I’ll have to see if they have something like this in Denver, that is really a great idea!

  3. So cool. I’ve been to “painting and sipping” classes here in Denver, but I love the idea of using live models who are also artists – a perfect circle of entertainment and creativity! Thanks for sharing.
